Welcome to Lighthouse Lovers Vacation Home

Prince Edward Island’s small size is a boon for vacationers who want to explore the whole province. It is only 224 km (140 miles)long and ranges from 6 to 64 km (4 to 40 mi.) wide. The deeply indented coastline has hundreds of kilometers of sandy beaches and high red capes. There are approximately fifty lighthouses and range lights guiding fishermen and others who follow the sea. Of that number, forty- three are still active navigation beacons. Seven are open to the public in summer. All but three can be easily reached by car, and the ones which can’t be, are easily photographed from shore.

With that in mind, we invite you to FOLLOW THE LIGHTS ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND. Get of the beaten track, and explore these beautiful beacons.

In this section of the web site, we are highlighting twenty lighthouses. When you visit the Lighthouse Lovers’ Vacation Home, you can get information and see pictures of almost every Island light, both active and decommissioned. I have long felt that there needed to be a place where people could learn about the history and the mystery of our lighthouses, and now that the Lighthouse Lovers’ Vacation Home is open, we invite you to come and enjoy both the lovely home and the lighthouse lore. Of course we have not neglected lighthouses from other places!

Carol was the founding president of the West Point Development Corporation, a not for profit community group which opened the West Point Lighthouse as Canada’s only Inn in a Lighthouse in 1984. She was manager of the West Point Lighthouse from 1991-1996. She was the founder of the Prince Edward Island Lighthouse Society in 1996. She was a founding member and co-chair of the Atlantic Lighthouse Council. She grew up within the sight of the West Point Lighthouse and for her, it has been a symbol of family history, a sentinel for untold numbers of people at sea; a light in the darkness to guide her home.
