| The Covehead Lighthouse was built in 1967 and was located at Red Cape. It is an experimental three-sided structure. This experimental form has always made the structure look crooked regardless of how one looks at it. hi 1975, due to erosion, the site was moved and a new square tapered lighthouse was built. The present Lighthouse is 8.2 m (26.9 ft) in height and is 10.0 m above sea level. The Lighthouse has always been fully automated and has had a fog detector and fog horn which was made in Sweden. The Lighthouse is maintained by the Coast Guard and is considered a landfall light. It is equipped with a mercury vapour filament lamp and the light can be seen for seven nautical miles. The flash pattern at Covehead is 1 sec on, 4 sec off. The bullseye lens is over 100 years old and was brought from Dalhousie to be used in Covehead. The lens is made of cut prisms called bullseyes which concentrate the light and send it out in one direction. The bulb in the lamp is changed every three to five years because they begin to blacken but never burn out. The lighthouse was renovated hi 1994 due to rotting. The lighthouse is now covered with pressure treated cedar siding.
There is a^plaque on the side of the lighthouse describing the Yankee Gale and remembering those who perished in the storm.
The Lighthouse is accessible by land. This lighthouse is located inside the Prince Edward Island National Park beside the entrance to Covehead Bay. If you don't already have a park pass, you must purchase one at the entrance to the park. The lighthouse is easily located as you drive along the shore road.
