We are located in Beautiful West Point PEI
North Rustico
The North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse was constructed in 1876-77. This coastal Lighthouse overlooks the Gulf of St. Lawrence and North Rustico Harbour on the north shore of Prince Edward Island. It aided in the development of the local fishing industry. The wooden, tapered Lighthouse stands 10.7 m in height from base to vane with a focal height of 7.5 m. The Lighthouse's flash pattern is flash 5 sec., eclipse 5 sec. The square Lighthouse has an attached dwelling. Unlike many other Island lighthouses, the North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse has a vinyl exterior. The Lighthouse was designed by the Department of Marine and Fisheries. The design of the Lighthouse was carefully planned as can be seen with the placement of the windows. The dwelling has two windows on each of the long facades and one on the tower end. The tower windows on the long fa cade align vertically with the corresponding dwelling windows. One should also note the lantern's wooden brackets and balustrade. The Lighthouse's builder is unknown.

The North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse was been repaired and moved a number of times. The Lighthouse was first moved in 1884. On January 12th, 1899, the Lighthouse was undermined and capsized during a storm. The Lighthouse was moved and rebuilt as a coastal Lighthouse. Around 1914, the Lighthouse was once again moved. In 1954, the Lighthouse received a new foundation. The attached dwelling was leased as a summer residence from 1968 to approximately 1973.

A new Lighthouse was built in 1973 and the old Lighthouse was declared surplus in 1974-75. The original Lighthouse was to be destroyed, but local residents strongly reacted to this proposal. They didn't want to see the Lighthouse either sold or dismantled due to its historic and aesthetic value. The light was re-established in the old Lighthouse in 1976. The attached dwelling now houses the fog alarm equipment.

George Pineau was keeper of the North Rustico Harbour Lighthouse from 1925 until 1960 when the light became automated.

The village of North Rustico is located along Blue Heron Drive, Route 6. To locate the lighthouse, leave Route 6, Blue Heron Drive at North Rustico and continue towards North Rustico Harbour. The lighthouse is located along the shore. There is a roadway of sorts along the seaward side of the light or you can view it from behind at the end of the main road.
