New London
The New London Lighthouse was constructed in 1876 and is located in New London, Prince Edward Island. It overlooks the entrance to New London Bay on the north shore of Prince Edward Island. The New London Lighthouse was one of a number of lighthouses established as aids to navigation along the north shore of Prince Edward Island during the 1870s. The Lighthouse was built to serve the fishing community and continues to perform this role. Originally constructed as an independent light, it became the back of a pair of range lights when a front range light was built in 1879.

The wooden, tapered Lighthouse stands 14.1 m (46.2 ft) in height from base to vane. The square, shingled Lighthouse also has an attached dwelling. The square design of so many Island Lighthouses was found to provide good support for a lantern and for this reason, the design was frequently repeated. The light's flash pattern is flash 2 sec., eclipse 2 sec. The Lighthouse has few decorative touches except for the shed roofs over the openings. The New London Lighthouse is painted in the usual Coast Guard colors of red and white. The Lighthouse was designed by the Department of Marine and Fisheries and it is unknown who built the Lighthouse. The site has seen very few changes over the years. The Front Range Light location was changed several times over the years due to shifting sands in the channel at the entrance of the harbour.

The New London Lighthouse has seen one of the very few female light keepers hi Atlantic Canada. When light keeper Claude Adams died in 1943, his wife Maisie decided to take over the light keeper's position. She held the position until 1955 when she decided to move to Summerside.

In July 1883, the Marco Polo, the fastest sailing ship in the world sank on the sand bars five miles east of this Lighthouse.

To locate the New London Lighthouse, on Blue Heron Drive Route 20, turn north at French River and drive past the scenic harbour. At the end of the road, turn right and drive down to the end of this road. The New London Lighthouse is located among the dunes. The road to the light is not a public road and the lighthouse is privately leased. Ptease respect their privacy.
