Northport
The Northport Back Range Lighthouse was constructed in 1885 and is located in Northport, Prince Edward Island. The Back Range Light overlooks the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Cascumpec Bay on the northwest shore of Prince Edward Island. This Back Range Light aided in the development of the fishing industry in and around Alberton and helped to guide the fishermen home.

The square, wooden, tapered Range Light stands 13.6 m (44.6 ft) in height from base to vane. The oddly-shaped Range Light which has a shingled exterior was originally an open frame tower which was enclosed in 1903. It was raised 11 feet in 1887 and another 6 feet in 1970. The result, a curious combination of sloped base and straight top gives the structure an unusual look but was more successful than the mismatched slopes of the Haszard Front Range Light. The Range Light is very simple with no decorative details.

The Northport Back Range Light, originally a Front Range Light was designed by the Department of Marine and Fisheries and its builder is unknown. In 1910, the tower was moved along with the old back tower to align with the channel. The Range Light saw major repairs in 1911 and was moved again hi 1943. It was moved back to become the Back Range Light when a new Front Range Light was constructed hi 1962.

It will be an attractive component of the Northport Pier Development which is under constructing in 2002.

To locate the Range Light, make your way to Alberton, located on Lady Slipper Drive, Route 12. From there, look for directions to Northport Harbour. The Range Light will be located just past the Historic Sea Rescue Station.
